How much time do Americans spend on their mobile phones? We wanted to learn more about mobile phone usage, so we asked Maru Springboard America. We found that 96% of respondents own a mobile phone.

15% of those with a mobile phone spend 5 or more hours each day on their phone. That’s a lot of screen time! The most frequently used mobile apps (used at least once per week) are social media apps like Facebook or Instagram (59%), banking apps (42%), and games like Candy Crush or Solitaire (39%).

One third (33%) of respondents get a new mobile phone once every 2-3 years while another one third (31%) get one every 4-5 years. Only 3% of respondents get a new phone every year.

The most common reason respondents last got a new phone was that the old phone stopped working well (53%). So it seems that the average life span of a mobile phone that’s frequently used is less than 5 years – this is good to know to work that new device into your budget.
